| Summary, etc. | L’expression «développement durable» a été forgée il y a une vingtaine d’années par les institutions internationales pour qualifier la troisième «décennie du développement». Ce baptême a été amplement couronné de succès, le terme étant repris aujourd’hui par une multitude d’acteurs. Pour autant, celui-ci suscite toujours des interrogations sur le sens à lui attribuer. Nous procédons ici, dans le domaine de l’analyse économique, à une sorte d’archéologie du terme qui permet de montrer qu’il est issu de traditions de pensée fort diverses. On ne s’étonnera donc pas que la notion de développement soutenable apparaisse ambivalente. Si l’on veut voir là les caractéristiques d’une figure de compromis, l’interrogation porte sur la façon d’organiser le débat entre ces différentes conceptions du développement soutenable. |

| Summary, etc. | Landmarks for an history of the idea of sustainable development «Sustainable development» is a term that was created by international institutions twenty years ago to qualify the third «decade of development». This phrase has had a real success, so much that a large number of actors use it. At the same time, questions about its real meaning still remain. In this paper, we propose a sort of archaeological perspective on this concept, in the domain of economic analysis, and we demonstrate that shows that «sustainable development» has inherited different schools of thought. No surprise then that this concept is ambivalent. Indeed, if it has the characteristics of a compromise solution, the question now is how to organize the debate between these different conceptions of sustainable development. |
