| Summary, etc. | Ouverture économique et inégalités régionales de développement en Chine : le rôle des institutions Maurice CATIN et Christophe VAN HUFFEL La Chine connaît un fort développement économique depuis 1978 qui s’est accompagné d’un dualisme croissant entre ses provinces côtières fortement insérées dans l’économie mondiale et ses provinces intérieures dont les marchés restent très cloisonnés. Cet article montre que les choix institutionnels du gouvernement ont largement contribué à cette dichotomie, accentuant ainsi les disparités régionales. D’une part, l’ouverture graduelle du territoire aux échanges internationaux a conduit les provinces maritimes à devenir le moteur de la croissance. D’autre part, de multiples freins à l’ouverture interne ralentissent la diffusion du développement vers les provinces intérieures. |

| Summary, etc. | Institutions, openness and regional inequalities of the Chinese development Maurice CATIN et Christophe VAN HUFFEL Despite a dramatic growth since 1978, China shows an increasing dualism between its coastal provinces highly integrated in the world economy and its relatively autarkical hinterland provinces. This paper shows that government institutional choices have largely contributed to this dichotomy, leading to growing regional disparities. On the one hand, the country’s gradual opening to trade has led the coastal region to become the driving force behind the Chinese growth. On the other hand, the limited internal openness slows down the diffusion of development through internal provinces. |
