| Summary, etc. | Le 26 février 1995, le Yémen et l’Arabie saoudite ont signé l’accord de La Mecque qui met en place un dispositif permettant de procéder à la délimitation de leurs frontières. Le Yémen y accepte les termes de l’accord de Taëf de 1934 qui consacrait le rattachement de la province de l’Assir à l’Arabie saoudite, abandonnant ainsi ses revendications sur ce territoire. Cet accord va-t-il mettre fin à un contentieux territorial qui date de la création du Royaume d’Arabie saoudite ? Ou bien l’Arabie profite-t-elle, comme le pense l’opposition yéménite, de la situation de faiblesse actuelle de son voisin pour imposer ses vues et poser des obstacles à une unification qu’elle juge menaçante ? |

| Summary, etc. | On 26th February 1995, Yemen and Saudi Arabia signed the Mecca agreement which set up an arrangement for defining their borders. Yemen accepted the terms of the 1934 Treaty of at-Ta’if which consecrated the attachment of the province of Asir to Saudi Arabia, thus abandoning its claims over this territory. Will this agreement put an end to a territorial dispute which dates from the creation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ? Or rather, as the opposition in Yemen thinks, will Saudi Arabia take advantage of its neighbour’s current weakness to impose its views and put obstacles in the path of unification which it considers threatening ? |
