| Summary, etc. | La majorité des micro- et petites entreprises (MPE) en Égypte font partie du secteur informel. Vu leur importance économique et sociale, notre analyse transversale estime l’effet de l’informalité de 5 000 MPE en Égypte sur leur performance en 2003. Grâce à un modèle Probit à variables instrumentales, les résultats montrent que la réglementation des MPE affecte positivement leur performance. L’ampleur de cet effet est déterminée par les caractéristiques du capital humain et financier de chaque MPE, ce qui témoigne des avantages du secteur formel qui permet le renforcement de ces capitaux. |

| Summary, etc. | The informal micro and small enterprises in Egypt : a cross-section analysis Despite the socioeconomic importance of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in Egypt, most of them are running on an informal basis. This paper uses an instrumental variable approach to estimate the impact of informality on the performance of 5000 Egyptian MSEs in 2003. The results of our Probit model show that the productivity increases when the firm operates formally. However, this positive effect is subject to the improvement of MPEs’ human & financial capitals. These findings highlight the importance of formalization policies. |
