| Summary, etc. | Cet article a pour objectif d’étudier la transmission des noms et des armoiries de l’aristocratie curiale portugaise à la fin du Moyen Âge. Les noms et les armoiries jouaient un rôle clé en tant que discours symbolique englobant plusieurs éléments importants dans la définition des hiérarchies au sein de l’aristocratie. Le système de transmission des noms et des armoiries prolonge surtout, mais pas exclusivement, les signes paternels, ce qui est parfaitement cohérent face à la prédominance masculine de la société médiévale. Néanmoins, un nombre substantiel de transmissions passe par le côté maternel ou par d’autres ascendants, et elles forment ainsi une partie structurelle du système. Une division s’opère dans les parentèles aristocratiques : les aînés, en tant que successeurs, prolongent noms et armoiries du père, tandis que les cadets, hommes et femmes, peuvent reprendre, transmettre et faire circuler les symboles des autres ascendants, tout en accentuant les rapports avec d’autres lignages de l’espace social curial. L’origine ainsi que les fonctions sociales de ce système sont à mettre en rapport avec l’organisation du pouvoir aristocratique, sa relation avec la Couronne, et la manière dont la parenté a été un cadre de soutien à la reproduction sociale de l’aristocratie. |

| Summary, etc. | This article aims to study the transmission of names and coats of arms of the Portuguese curial aristocracy at the end of the Middle Ages. Names and coats of arms played a key role as a symbolic discourse encompassing several important elements in defining hierarchies within the aristocracy. The system was mainly, but not exclusively, structured around the transmission of paternal names and coats of arms, which is perfectly consistent with the male predominance in this society. Nevertheless, a substantial number of transmissions pass through the maternal side or other ascendants, thus forming a structural part of the system. A division is made in the aristocratic kinship: the elders, as successors, use the names and coats of arms of the father, while the perimeter formed by the younger men and women is the preferential space for circulating the symbols of the other ascendants, emphasizing broader relations with other lineages of the curial social space. The origin, as well as the social functions of this system, are to be related to other important points, concerning in particular the organization of aristocratic power, its relationship with the Crown, and the way in which kinship was a framework support for the social reproduction of the aristocracy. |
