Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Charles Péguy’s lost worldsThe idea of a golden age does not appear, in Peguy’s works per say. Nevertheless, it did structure his thinking in a very personal way. His political mythology is manyfold. His concern with time and history went hand in hand with a refutation of the idea of progress. He rejected bourgeois society and its mercantile values which he saw as signs of decadence and corruption. He gave an idealized vision of the past and a society characterized by harmony and moral purity. As with every political myth, Peguy’s combined his personal influence – imbued with intimacy and nostalgia – with a more universal vision of the advance of civilizations. Péguy’s lost worlds were a response to the dramatic changes brought up by the advent of modernity. He hoped for a utopian and harmonious society, of which he would remain a wandering citizen. |
