| Summary, etc. | Au xixe siècle, chacune des identités nationales cohabitant dans le royaume de Hongrie, au sein de l’empire des Habsbourg, crée son propre récit historique. Cela apparaît aussi, de manière indirecte, dans les arts visuels. Les épisodes du « passé utilisable » (usable past), véritable âge d’or mythifié, sont représentés sur les fresques des bâtiments publics. Ils atteignent ainsi un vaste cercle, renforcent l’identité nationale et imprègnent bientôt profondément la mémoire collective. À la fin du siècle, toutefois, dans un contexte marqué par un nationalisme de plus en plus exacerbé, se dessine une tentative de dépassement de cet âge d’or spécifique vers une dimension universelle. |

| Summary, etc. | National and universalIn the 19th century, each of the national identities in the Kingdom of Hungary, at the heart of the Habsburg Empire, created its own historical narrative. Such was also the case, but more indirectly, with visual arts. The famous moments of the usable past, portrayed as a mythical golden age, were represented on the front of buildings in public spaces. They therefore reached out to larger audiences and strengthened the bonds of national identity. Soon enough, they became part and parcel of collective memory. The end of the century saw the attempt at going beyond this specific golden age to attain a more universal dimension. |
