| Summary, etc. | Faire l’histoire du « monde des causes », c’est cerner la manière dont des horizons d’engagement ont été définis, défendus, contestés, incarnés, embrassés en tant que questions dites « d’intérêt général » voire « universelles », suite à un travail social et intellectuel visant à démontrer qu’y répondre exigeait d’œuvrer à travers les territoires et les souverainetés. Cet article part de trois épisodes récents de la chronique des organisations non-gouvernementales pour développer les prémices d’une conversation entre les travaux des historiens, de plus en plus nombreux à travailler sur ces thèmes, et ceux de leurs collègues des sciences sociales. Ce qu’ignorent les historiens, ce qu’ils croient savoir et ce qu’ils peuvent apporter. |

D.Researching and writing the history of the “world of causes” amounts to the study of ways and means by which commitments were made and unmade in order to support or contest small and big causes across territorial lines and sovereignty areas. This article fans out from 3 recent episodes in the contemporary world of causes. It explores what historians can learn from their social science colleagues, at a moment when more and more of the former embrace the study of international activism. What historians don’t know, what they believe they know and what they can help others to know. |
