| Summary, etc. | L’Empire des Romains, seul nom que se donne l’Empire byzantin, a duré onze siècles du fait de la cohésion idéologique autour du pouvoir impérial. Le christianisme promu par Constantin, au début du ive siècle, fait de l’Empereur le lieutenant de Dieu sur terre, magnifié par l’adoration codifiée dans le cérémonial et doté de pouvoirs religieux considérables. L’Empereur s’appuie sur une vraie administration publique qui, à l’exemple du Trésor (le génikon), repose sur la compétence. Des intellectuels formés à la grammaire, à la rhétorique, à la géométrie sont les garants de l’efficacité gestionnaire de l’Empire byzantin. Les vagues d’invasions, presque inefficaces jusqu’au xiie siècle, viennent à bout de l’Empire quand Turcs et les croisés s’en mêlent, en dépit du sursaut final sous la dynastie des Paléologues (1258-1453). |

| Summary, etc. | The Byzantine Empire : An imperial Quintessence ?The Byzantine Empire used no other name but “Roman Empire”. The imperial power benefited from an ideological cohesion, which explains why this Empire endured for eleven centuries. Christianity, as promoted by Constantine at the beginning of the 4th century, made the Emperor God’s lieutenant in this world. His power was increased through well-codified ceremonies and he was endowed with tremendous religious power. He could rely on a real public administration such as the Treasury - the génikon – which was run by competent officers. Men who were well-trained in grammar, rhetoric and geometry insured the efficiency of this administration. Invasions that had been quite inefficient until the 12th century finally do away with the Empire when the Turks and crusaders join in, despite a brilliant and last surge under the dynasty of the Palaiologoi (1258-1453). |
