| Summary, etc. | Cet article porte sur l’internationalisation de la santé publique en Asie pendant l’entre-deux-guerres. Je montrerai d’abord que les réseaux internationaux pour la santé ont créé des liens nouveaux dans toute l’Asie, ainsi qu’entre l’Asie et l’Europe, dans les années 1920. Je développerai ensuite l’idée selon laquelle, dès les années 1930, l’Asie du Sud et l’Asie du Sud-Est ont joué un rôle central dans les débats mondiaux sur la production agricole, la consommation alimentaire et la qualité de vie des populations. Les crises économiques des années 1930 ont reflété les avancées comme les limites des expériences menées en Asie. Les débats entre experts internationaux ont soulevé, sur le front politique et moral, des questions sur la souveraineté, les relations entre les nations, les empires et les relations internationales. |

| Summary, etc. | Internationalizing Public Health in South and Southeast Asia, c. 1919-1939This paper is concerned with the internationalization of public health in Asia during the inter-war years. The first section shows that international health networks created new connections across Asia, and between Asia and Europe in the 1920s. The second part of the paper shows that by the 1930s, South and Southeast Asia were central to the global debates on agricultural production, the consumption of food, and the welfare of populations. The economic crises of the 1930s reflected both the progress and the limitations of the 1920s’ experiments in Asia. The debates between international experts were drawn into moral and political debates about sovereignty, and on the relations between nations, empires, and international organizations. |
