| Summary, etc. | Il existerait aujourd’hui en langue chinoise plus de vingt traductions différentes du célèbre 1984 de George Orwell et plus d’une cinquantaine d’éditions différentes. Pour la première fois traduit en chinois en 1950 à Taïwan, il n’est introduit officiellement en Chine que près de trente ans plus tard. Chacune des versions aujourd’hui accessibles possède son histoire et son contexte spécifiques.Dans cette contribution, nous proposerons d’analyser l’histoire tumultueuse des traductions et de la réception du roman 1984 en Chine et à Taïwan. Afin de saisir au mieux le contexte à la fois politique, intellectuel et littéraire de ces traductions, l’angle d’approche privilégié sera principalement l’étude du paratexte des différentes versions de 1984 en langue chinoise. L’interprétation de 1984 et notamment de la figure de Big Brother s’avère ainsi extrêmement différente d’un contexte socio-historique à l’autre et donne lieu à des appropriations radicalement distinctes, entretenant du même coup toute la force de l’ambiguïté métaphorique de l’œuvre originale.Cette contribution s’attachera ainsi à explorer les représentations et les fantasmes sinophones de cette œuvre majeure du XXe siècle et sa portée sur les cercles littéraires chinois et taïwanais durant ces six dernières décennies. |

| Summary, etc. | There are today more than twenty Chinese translations of famous George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, and more than fifty different editions. Even if the novel was translated for the first time into Chinese in 1950 in Taiwan, it was introduced officially in China only nearly thirty years later. Each of the translations available today has its own specific historical context.In this paper, we propose to analyze the tumultuous history of translations and receptions of Nineteen Eighty-Four in both China and Taiwan. In order to better understand the political, intellectual and literary contexts of these translations, our angle of approach will be that of the study of the “paratext” of various Chinese-language versions of Nineteen Eighty-Four. The interpretation of Nineteen Eighty-Four and particularly of the figure of Big Brother could be extremely different regarding the socio-historical context and leads to radically different appropriations, maintaining by the way the strength of the metaphorical ambiguity of the original novel.This contribution will thus seek to explore the Sinophone representations and fantasies of this major twentieth-century’s masterpiece and its impacts on Chinese and Taiwanese literary circles during the past six decades. |
