Summary, etc. | En juin 1990, à l’occasion du premier anniversaire de l’incident du 4 juin, un film taïwanais, Mama, Love Me One More Time, a commencé à être projeté dans des salles de cinéma de Chine continentale. De manière assez inattendue, ce mélodrame familial à petit budget est devenu un énorme succès commercial. Basé sur le récit The Mad Woman’s 18 Years, un article de journal relatant les conflits émotionnels d’une femme abandonnée par son mari, le film constitue un exemple exceptionnel de la tradition chinoise du kuqing xi 苦情戲 (drames d’émotions amères). Se concentrant sur les épreuves et les tribulations de l’héroïne-victime, en particulier sur sa folie, cet essai examine le cadre mélodramatique du film et sa « stratégie des larmes ». Alors que le sentimentalisme du film a souvent été ridiculisé par des critiques élitistes, cet essai voit dans le croisement du personnel et du politique la réappropriation délibérée de thèmes universels, tels que l’amour maternel, la perte, le chagrin et le chagrin. Summary, etc. | In June 1990, on the one-year anniversary of the June 4th Incident, a Taiwanese film Mama, Love Me One More Time, started screening in mainland Chinese theaters. Rather unexpectedly, this low budget family melodrama became a huge commercial success. Based on The Mad Woman’s 18 Years, a newspaper story about the intensified emotional conflicts of a woman abandoned by her husband, the film presents an exceptional example of the Chinese kuqing xi 苦情戲 (dramas of bitter emotions) tradition. Focusing on the trials and tribulations of the victim-heroine, especially on her madness, this essay examines the film’s melodramatic framework and its tactics of tears. While the sentimentalism of the film has often been ridiculed by elitist critics, this essay sees the intersection of the personal and the political in the film’s deliberate re-appropriation of universal themes, such as maternal love, loss, grief and heartache. By investigating the interrelationship between the film’s affective structure and mainland China’s prevalent social-political milieu in the aftermath of the June 4th Incident, I argue that the film served as a space of socialization where the silencing effects on the audience as politically repressed subjects could be temporarily erased. In addition, by focusing on the mother’s suffering, the film gave prominence to feminine experiences and emotions, thus signaled the beginning of a new era where women started occupying the center stage in Chinese cultural history. |
