| Summary, etc. | De 1945 à 1949, Taïwan connut une crise économique sans précédent. Les Formosans confrontés à la flambée des prix virent leurs conditions de vie se détériorer très fortement ; une situation d’autant plus dure à supporter que les nationalistes alors au pouvoir semblaient moins se préoccuper des difficultés endurées par la population taïwanaise que de la guerre contre les communistes qu’ils menaient toujours sur le continent. Pourtant, cette période critique fut aussi le prélude à un renouveau de l’économie de l’île. Le contexte géopolitique de la fin des années 1940 qui conduisit Taïpei à se rapprocher de Washington et Tokyo allait être à l’origine de nouvelles opportunités économiques. D’une part, l’interruption des relations à travers le détroit protégea Formose des excès du régime maoïste. D’autre part, les relations privilégiées qui furent nouées avec les Etats-Unis et le Japon en termes de commerce extérieur, d’investissements directs étrangers et de partenariats entre multinationales américaines/japonaises et firmes locales ouvrirent la voie au développement économique de Taïwan après-guerre. |

| Summary, etc. | From 1945 to 1949, Taiwan went through an unprecedented economic crisis. The Formosans experienced a dramatic deterioration in their living conditions as they were confronted with hyperinflation, a situation that was particularly hard to bear because the Nationalists in power at the time seemed to care less about the hardship endured by the people than about the war they were still waging against the Communists on the Mainland. Yet, this watershed was also the prelude to a new start for the island’s economy. At the end of the 1940s, the geopolitical context that led Taipei to draw closer to Washington and Tokyo turned out to be a source of new economic opportunities. On the one hand, the suspension of the cross-strait relations protected Formosa from the excesses of the Maoist regime. On the other hand, the special relationships it built up with the United States and Japan in terms of foreign trade, foreign direct investment and partnerships between American/Japanese multinational corporations and local companies paved the way to Taiwan’s post-war economic development. |
