| Summary, etc. | Cet article examine les rapports entre l’impérialisme et le télégraphe dans l’espace méditerranéen. En se focalisant sur les expéditions navales tant britanniques que françaises, il montre que ces expéditions sont marquées par des innovations visant à créer une information capable de traverser la mer. Mais cette volonté de contrôler la mer par l’information immédiate rencontre de nombreux échecs. Ainsi est-il possible de relativiser les transformations technologiques du XIXe siècle en montrant comment elles s’insèrent dans un temps long, dans lequel les intermédiaires et la géographie de la mer continuent à jouer un rôle clé. |

| Summary, etc. | This article examines the links between imperialism and telegraphy in the Mediterranean. Focusing on British and French naval expeditions, it shows how these expeditions attempted to create unified information across the sea. But this desire to control the sea through immediate information failed repeatedly. Examining these expeditions allows us to understand nineteenth-century technological transformations within the context of a longer history of Mediterranean information, in which intermediaries and the geography of the sea continue to play a key role. |
