| Summary, etc. | Cet article analyse la question des trophées humains collectés durant la longue « guerre de Trente Ans » qui caractérisa la colonie du roi des Belges, Léopold II, des années 1880 à 1900. Dans cet État indépendant du Congo, les guerres de conquête furent marquées par de nombreuses pratiques de collecte de trophées humains par les troupes coloniales et leurs chefs européens. Après avoir rappelé que le démembrement des corps constitue avant tout une critique faite aux pratiques combattantes des sociétés africaines, cet article étudie la réutilisation de ces pratiques, leur typologie (mains coupées, décapitations, etc.) et leurs significations politiques dans le cadre de la société coloniale naissante. Enfin, il analyse le scandale constitué par ces trophées humains dans les sociétés européennes au début du xxe siècle, marquant là l’une des plus fortes critiques adressées aux militaires de l’État indépendant du Congo. |

| Summary, etc. | The “Bloody Trophies” of Conquest: Cutting of Bodies and Colonial Wars in the Congo Free State Late Nineteenth Century–Early Twentieth CenturyThis article analyzes the debate over human trophies collected during the long “thirty years’ war” in the colony of Leopold II, King of the Belgians, from the 1880s to the early 1900s. In this Congo Free State, the collection of human trophies was a very common practice for colonial troops and their European chiefs during the wars of conquest. After discussing how the dismemberment of bodies was one of the main criticisms leveled against war practices in African societies, this article will analyze the reuse of such practices, their typology (e.g., severed hands, decapitations), and their political meaning inside this nascent colonial society. Lastly, it will focus on the scandal that resulted from those human trophies in European societies at the beginning of the twentieth century, as the practice was one of the harshest criticisms directed at soldiers in the Congo Free State. |
