| Summary, etc. | Cet article analyse le développement des activités du Comité international de la Croix-Rouge (CICR) en Afrique subsaharienne durant les années 1960. Après une étude rapide de l’implantation de la Croix-Rouge dans la région avant cette décennie, il se penche sur les difficultés qui accompagnèrent la quête de légitimité du CICR sur le continent lors de l’avènement des indépendances. Il montre qu’aux yeux de ses interlocuteurs, la composition essentiellement suisse du Comité, ainsi que certains des choix qu’il opéra sur le terrain, entrèrent parfois en contradiction avec l’image d’organisation humanitaire internationale neutre et impartiale qu’il essayait de promouvoir. |

| Summary, etc. | This article analyses the development of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) activities in sub-Saharan Africa during the 1960s. It starts with a brief overview of the Red Cross movement’s work in the region before that decade. Then, the article sheds light on the difficulties that accompanied ICRC’s quest for legitimacy in the context of the end of empires. The ICRC tried to foster an image of a neutral, impartial, and international humanitarian organization. However, the Committee’s essentially Swiss composition, as well as some of the choices it made on the ground, blurred its image among the African leaders. |
