| Summary, etc. | Les employés domestiques présents dans tous les foyers des colons et des coloniaux sont placés au plus près de l’intimité familiale, mais ils sont toujours ramenés à une différence qui structure la domination coloniale. Ils assument des tâches qui touchent aux fonctions corporelles de leurs maîtres, mais leur corps constitue à la fois un marqueur de la différence, un lieu et un vecteur de transformation sociale et culturelle par l’inculcation de règles d’hygiène et de pratiques domestiques définies selon les normes européennes. Cette tension entre proximité et mise à distance fait de la domesticité coloniale un observatoire privilégié d’une domination inscrite dans la différence des corps.Cet article propose une « description dense » des interactions ordinaires entre maîtresses de maison européennes et serviteurs africains dans le quotidien de la vie domestique. Il s’appuie sur le vaste corpus des écrits de Karen Blixen et Doris Lessing, ainsi que sur le témoignage de l’ancien cuisinier de Karen Blixen, Kamante Gatura. |

| Summary, etc. | Domestic servants were present in all colonial settlers’ homes, as close as possible to the intimacy of the family, but they were always reduced to a difference that structured colonial domination. They took on tasks relating to their masters’ bodily functions, but their bodies were at once a marker of difference, a place and a vehicle for social and cultural transformation through the inculcation of rules of hygiene and domestic practices defined according to European standards. This tension between proximity and distance makes colonial domesticity a privileged observatory of a domination inscribed in the difference of bodies. This article offers a “dense description” of the ordinary interactions between European housewives and African servants in everyday domestic life. It draws on the extensive writings by Karen Blixen and Doris Lessing, as well as the testimony of Karen Blixen’s former cook, Kamante Gatura. |
