| Summary, etc. | Jean-Claude Éloy est un compositeur passionné de musiques extra-européennes – en particulier de musique japonaise – qui revendique un multiculturalisme militant et refuse farouchement que sa démarche puisse être associée à un quelconque exotisme. Pourtant, et sans que la sincérité de son positionnement idéologique puisse être remise en cause, certaines ambiguïtés apparaissent au fur et à mesure de l’étude de sa production. Ainsi, si l’exotisme de surface caractéristique du cœur du xixe siècle a bien disparu au profit d’un intérêt largement documenté pour les cultures musicales non occidentales, on n’en décèle pas moins, dans l’œuvre comme dans la riche production écrite du compositeur, la permanence de thèmes caractéristiques de cet exotisme.L’étude s’appuie en premier lieu sur la définition, à partir du champ littéraire, des thèmes qui sous-tendent l’expression d’un exotisme traditionnel. L’enjeu de l’analyse repose ensuite sur les modalités de traduction de ces thèmes littéraires en sèmes musicaux et leur repérage dans l’œuvre mais également leur articulation avec la sensation d’altérité qui fonde tout exotisme. L’élucidation du paradoxe relevé dans l’œuvre nous amène enfin à formuler l’hypothèse d’un exotisme postcolonial. |

| Summary, etc. | Jean-Claude Éloy is a French composer with a profound interest in non-European music – especially Japanese music – who asserts a militant muticulturalism and vehemently refuses his approach to be associated with any kind of exoticism. However, without questioning Éloy’s intellectual honesty, certain ambiguities appear when studying his works. For instance, even though the superficial exoticism typical of the 19th century does not appear in his music, we can nevertheless detect in some of his works the persistence of themes that are characteristic of this exoticism.Our study first aims to define, from a literary point of view, the themes of traditional exoticism. The analysis then goes on to consider the translation of these themes into musical semes and their presence in Éloy’s works, and also how they are connected to the feeling of otherness that underpins all exoticism. The explanation of the paradox between musical reality and Éloy’s work eventually leads us to suggest a notion of postcolonial exoticism. |
