Summary, etc. | L’expression « French touch » désigne un courant de musique électronique parisien qui a connu une grande popularité internationale de la fin des années 1990 au début des années 2000, incluant parmi ses artistes les plus représentatifs Daft Punk, Air, Stardust, Cassius, Motorbass, Étienne de Crécy, St Germain et Mr. Oizo. Alors que la French touch est généralement définie prioritairement sur la base de critères géographiques, historiques et sociaux, le présent article se propose de mettre en évidence ses caractéristiques musicales spécifiques à partir d’une analyse musicale comparative. Réalisée sur un corpus principal de huit œuvres représentatives de la French touch et de la deep house, cette analyse permet de confirmer le rôle prépondérant du filtrage de fréquences, ainsi que l’importance des influences disco passant notamment, mais pas seulement, par l’usage de samples. Elle met également en évidence l’hétérogénéité harmonique de la French touch, son goût prononcé pour les instruments analogiques et sa tendance à désincarner les voix par divers traitements électroniques. |

Summary, etc. | The term “French house” (called “French touch” in France) refers to a Parisian electronic music movement that reached international popularity from the late 1990s to the early 2000s, with artists such as Daft Punk, Air, Stardust, Cassius, Motorbass, Étienne de Crécy, St Germain and Mr. Oizo among its most representative. While French touch is generally defined primarily on the basis of geographical, historical and social criteria, this article aims to highlight its specific musical characteristics on the basis of a comparative musical analysis. Based on a main corpus of eight works representative of French house and Deep house, this analysis confirms the preponderant role of frequency filtering as well as the importance of disco influences notably, but not exclusively, through the use of samples. It also highlights the harmonic heterogeneity of French Touch, its pronounced taste for analogue instruments and its tendency to disembody vocals through various electronic treatments. |
