| Summary, etc. | Le 500e anniversaire du Prince (1513) invite à explorer la conception de la négociation chez Machiavel, telle qu’elle apparaît dans ses différentes œuvres, rédigées après avoir effectué de nombreuses missions diplomatiques. Pour Machiavel, préoccupé avant tout par l’ordre de la Cité et par la force sous sa forme extrême – la guerre –, la négociation n’est que seconde dans l’ordre de l’esprit ; mais elle n’est certainement pas secondaire dans l’ordre du réel. Elle est un outil important de l’action du Prince via ses ambassadeurs, pour lesquels Machiavel rédigea plusieurs instructions diplomatiques. Y transparaît une conception de la négociation associée à la ruse et dominée par la question du secret : comment conserver le sien et percer celui d’autrui. |

| Summary, etc. | The 500th anniversary of The Prince (1513) provides a timely opportunity to explore Machiavelli’s conception of negotiation, as it appears in his works, written following several diplomatic missions. While clearly obsessed by the necessity of a stable political order, and by force through its extreme manifestation – war –, Machiavelli does not consider negotiation to be secondary. Negotiation becomes an important tool for the Prince, through his ambassadors, for which Machiavelli wrote several diplomatic instructions. In his dispatches, negotiation appears to be dominated by a concern for secrecy and dissimulation. |
