520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Cushing’s syndrome is one of the most common endocrine diseases in dogs. Most dogs are diagnosed older than 6 years and some breeds are predisposed. A suspicion of Cushing’s syndrome is typically based on history and physical examination findings and can be supported by clinicopathological abnormalities. Adrenal function tests are imperfect. Therefore, it is particularly important to perform these tests when there is a high index of suspicion, in order to increase the pre-test probability. Adrenal function tests results should always be interpreted in light of epidemiological, clinical and clinicopathological findings. Following a diagnosis of naturally-occurring Cushing’s syndrome, differentiation between different forms should be considered in order to optimize management strategies and prognosticate. This can be done using dynamic tests, endogenous ACTH assay and/or imaging studies. |
