| Summary, etc. | The rumen, the first fore-stomach in ruminants, is a cornerstone in fulfilling the first three principles of agroecology : Developing integrated management practices to enhance animal health : thanks to its production of energy, amino acids, B vitamins, and its detoxification capacity, the rumen microbiota is crucial for the animal health. Maximizing the use of natural resources and co-products to reduce production inputs : the rumen enables ruminants to make the most of natural resources and co-products inedible by humans, such as meadows and fiber-rich plants. There is also a strong relationship between rumen digestion and feed efficiency. Optimizing livestock farming systems to mitigate pollution : the ruminal microbiota is a major contributor to methane emissions. However, solutions are currently being explored to reduce methane emissions. Optimizing the ruminal microbiota through feeding, genetic selection and nutritional programming of young animals opens the way to better animal health management and more sustainable agricultural production. |

| Summary, etc. | Le rumen, premier pré-estomac des ruminants, permet de répondre aux trois premiers principes de l’agroécologie : Développer des pratiques de gestion intégrée pour améliorer la santé animale : du fait de sa production d’énergie, d’acides aminés et de vitamines B, et sa capacité de détoxification, le microbiote ruminal joue un rôle crucial dans la santé des animaux. Potentialiser l’utilisation des ressources naturelles et des coproduits pour diminuer les intrants nécessaires à la production : le rumen permet aux ruminants de valoriser des ressources naturelles et des coproduits non consommables par l’Homme, comme les prairies et les végétaux riches en fibres. Par ailleurs, des relations fortes existent entre la digestion ruminale et l’efficacité alimentaire. Optimiser le fonctionnement des systèmes d’élevage pour réduire les pollutions : le microbiote ruminal est un contributeur majeur à l’émission de méthane. Cependant, des solutions sont actuellement explorées pour réduire celle-ci. L’optimisation du microbiote ruminal par l’alimentation, la sélection génétique et la programmation nutritionnelle des jeunes animaux ouvre la voie à une meilleure gestion de la santé animale et à une production agricole plus durable. |
