520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Research in developmental psychology has shown that self-awareness plays a central role in child development. From the earliest weeks of life, infants gradually and naturally acquire a primary form of self-awareness. This enables them to organize their world and their sensory perceptions, to act and to develop a psychic life of their own. What about the child with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities, whose profound intellectual and motor disabilities hinder the exploration of the environment and the instrumentation of the body? The first part of this article presents a conceptual framework on primary self-awareness and reports on the first results of research on the expressions of primary self-awareness in children with PIMD. Then proposals on how to proceed with the observations are made, illustrated by tasks coming from an instrument built for this purpose. The last part is devoted to ways of stimulating the development of self-awareness in children with PIMD. |
