| Summary, etc. | Between 1891 and 1892, an original experiment concerning the photographic analysis of speech movements was undertaken jointly by the Parc des Princes physiological center and the National Institution for the Deaf-Mutes of Paris. The experiment was conducted by Georges Demeny who studied the movements made by the mouth during speech through a series of photographs taken of the faces of speaking subjects. The experiment helped him design the first photographic image projector and lead him soon thereafter on a commercial endeavor which eventually failed. Although Georges Demeny can be considered to be the scientific founder of gymnastics (which at that time became known as physical education), and despite the fact that today his name is primarily associated with that discipline, he was above all a biophysicist and physiologist as well as having been connected from its conceptual origins with the invention of cinematography. |

| Summary, etc. | Au cours des années 1891-1892, une expérience originale de chronophotographie de la parole a lieu conjointement à la Station physiologique du Parc des Princes et à l’Institution nationale des sourds-muets de Paris. Elle est menée par Georges Demenÿ qui va alors étudier les mouvements de la bouche pendant la parole au moyen de chronophotographies de visages de « parleurs ». Cette expérience lui permettra de développer le premier appareil de projection d’images et le lancera quelque temps après dans une aventure commerciale qui se soldera par un échec. Si aujourd’hui le nom de Georges Demenÿ est essentiellement associé à la gymnastique, qui devient à cette époque éducation physique, et s’il peut en être considéré comme le père scientifique, il est avant tout un biomécanicien et un physiologiste tout comme un personnage associé à l’invention du cinéma dès sa conceptualisation. |
