Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The purpose of this article is to summarize the genealogy of the psychiatrisation of childhood in Brazil starting with the distinction/assimilation in the 19th century between mental retardation and madness in the theses of the country’s first psychiatrists working at the the Rio de Janeiro medical school. The article also deals with the emergence of the figure of the abnormal child at the beginning of the 20th century. Our hypothesis contradicts what might seem to be obvious. We believe that it is not the insane child that led to the psychiatrisation of childhood, but rather the retarded child, studied in a book by Séguin. Séguin defined mental retardation as a stage in the development of children, thus making possible subsequent comparison between mental age and chronological age. This approach is linked to a model of care combining practices of medical institutions with those of education, an approach which is explicit in the name of Brazil’s first center for children with disabilities: the “ Pavilhão-Escola Bourneville para Creanças Anormaes” (the Bourneville Ward-School for Abnormal Children), founded in 1903/1904, in the former Hospício Nacional de Alienados. |
