| Summary, etc. | RésuméIl faut à l’homme que sa vie soit davantage que la simple existence, qu’elle ait un sens qui la déborde. Il s’efforce ainsi de la régler dans le respect des normes et des obligations qui lui ont été transmises, à rester fidèle à des valeurs de fraternité et de solidarité, à poursuivre le bien, ou à accomplir son Devoir en toutes circonstances. Cependant, toutes ces notions sont abstraites et ambiguës. Aucune Règle d’Or, aucune Éthique, fût-elle fondée sur des croyances, la connaissance ou la raison, ne saurait permettre de porter un jugement assuré sur ce qui est « bien » ou ce qui est « mal ». Les interdits définissent les limites à ne pas franchir, les prescriptions indiquent une direction, mais ils ne prennent en compte qu’une partie des possibles. Il reste une vaste zone grise où le sens des actes change de signe selon le point de vue où l’on se place… |

| Summary, etc. | Life must have a meaning beyond simple existence. Men thus try to adjust their lives by respecting the standards and obligations that were passed on to them, by remaining faithful to values of brotherhood and solidarity, by pursuing the Good, or by carrying out their Duty in any circumstances. However, all these notions are abstract and ambiguous. No Golden rule, no Ethics, based on faith, knowledge or reason, can allow to carry an assured judgment on what is « good » or what is « bad ». Prohibitions define the limits not to be crossed, prescriptions indicate a direction, but they take into account only a part of the possible. There is a vast grey zone where the meaning of acts changes sign according to the point of view… |
