| Summary, etc. | RésuméCet article propose de donner à voir les coulisses de plusieurs enquêtes réalisées en milieu carcéral entre 1997 et 2006 et de montrer à quel point le chercheur n’est jamais maître de son terrain, comment il doit composer avec lui. L’accent est particulièrement mis sur le principe du don et du contre-don inhérent à toutes les situations d’enquête et qu’une ethnographie carcérale met explicitement au jour. Car donner, recevoir, rendre sont au cœur de la relation qui se noue entre le chercheur et les surveillants. |

| Summary, etc. | The purpose of this paper is to unveil the wings of different investigations conducted in prison between 1997 and 2006 and to show how the researcher has to come to terms with his field as he or she can never master it. Focus is put on the principle of the gift and the obligation to give back. This principle lies low in any situation of investigation but prison life ethnography fully highlights it. Because giving, receiving and giving back is at the heart of the relationship between research worker and warder. |
