520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The adventures of Tintin can easily be seen as an illustration of Interwar internationalism under the aegis of the League of Nations, as well as a controversial example of colonial imagination. Yet nowhere does Hergé mention explicitly the main case of internationalism and colonialism merging during the Interwar period, namely, the mandates system. Still, more than passing references are made to the Middle Eastern mandates in Cigars of the Pharaoh and the first version of Land of Black Gold, published in Le Petit Vingtième, the illustrated weekly that supplemented the catholic nationalist Belgian daily Le Vingtième siècle. But the way Middle Eastern issues such as the 1925 Syrian Revolt, the works on the Kirkuk-Haifa pipeline or the 1936 Arab Revolt in Palestine were tackled in the newspaper sheds light on certain episodes of Tintin’s Middle Eastern adventures. Conversely, the aforementioned adventures, first published in 1932-1934 and 1939-1940 respectively, and the daily handling of Middle Eastern affairs in newspapers show the same drift from optimism about the social and cultural transformation under way in the Middle Eastern statelets to colonial and strategic anxieties in the wake of World War II.
