| Summary, etc. | Cet article traite des relations d’Albert Schweitzer avec l’industrie pharmaceutique du xxe siècle. Le célèbre médecin brilla moins par son génie médical que par son habilité à s’attacher les services des hommes et des organisations au profit de son hôpital de Lambaréné entre 1913 et 1965. Sa correspondance avec des représentants de l’industrie du médicament montre la virtuosité d’un médecin atypique, un homme de réseaux dont les ramifications s’étendent de l’Afrique à l’Asie en passant par l’Amérique et l’Europe. Ses canaux d’approvisionnement en médicaments de Bâle, de New York, de Tokyo, etc., lui permettent souvent de contourner les circuits coloniaux de distribution, faisant de lui un pionnier dans l’utilisation de certaines spécialités pharmaceutiques en Afrique sub-saharienne. Basée sur les archives privées de Schweitzer, cette étude montre que l’hôpital de Lambaréné s’est livré à des essais cliniques même si Schweitzer s’avère être un médecin plutôt prudent qui n’hésite pas d’opposer un refus à certaines sollicitations. |

| Summary, etc. | This article is about Dr. Albert Schweitzer and his relationship with the xxth-Century pharmaceutical industry. It reveals Schweitzer’s remarkable ability to lure people and organizations to the cause of his hospital of Lambaréné in Africa. His private and professional relationships often overlapped, and show him as a greater networking person than a medical practitioner. His epistolary network expanded worldwide from 1913 to 1965, and allowed him bridge Africa to America, Asia, and Europe. He and his medical facility thus got supported, often receiving drugs for free from most leading pharmaceutical companies of that time. Based on Schweitzer’s recently available medical correspondence and reports, this essay affirms that such international connections involved drugs trials although the called ‘Grand Docteur’ disclosed some alertness in business. |
