| Summary, etc. | Du vote de la loi de départementalisation, en mars 1946, à la première élection du Conseil régional au suffrage universel direct en 1983, la vie politique réunionnaise a été marquée par de violents affrontements autour de la question du statut. La départementalisation accordée aux « quatre vieilles » (colonies) grâce à l’appui décisif du PCF, pour des raisons de politique nationale, devient ensuite un sujet d’affrontement virulent dans un contexte international de décolonisation et de guerre froide. Si La Réunion apparaît aujourd’hui comme un territoire développé au sein de son environnement régional, l’ensemble des acteurs politiques locaux s’accordent à reconnaître les limites atteintes par cette « décolonisation intra-française » tout en saluant les progrès accomplis. L’enjeu est à présent de s’appuyer sur ces réussites pour arriver à corriger les profondes inégalités sociales héritées de la colonisation et à faire de La Réunion, territoire français, un « centre-relais » dans le sud-ouest de l’océan Indien. |

| Summary, etc. | Reunion Island, French Territory in the Indian Ocean : Home and Foreign Policy Challenges (1946-1983) From the vote of the law on departementalisation in March 1946, to the first election to the regional council by direct universal suffrage in 1983, the political life of Reunion Island has been characterized by violent confrontations about its status issue. Departementalisation accorded to the « Four Olds » (colonies) thanks to decisive support from the French Communist Party, for reasons connected with the national political situation, subsequently appeared to be an explosive question in the international context of decolonization and Cold War. Nowadays, even if Reunion Island can be seen as a developed territory in its regional surroundings, all the local politicians generally agree to recognize the limits reached by this “intra-French decolonization” while welcoming the progress achieved. Today, the challenge is to manage to rely on these successes in order to correct the deep social inequalities inherited from decolonization and to make Reunion island, French territory, a « relay center » in the South-West Indian Ocean. |
