| Summary, etc. | À partir de l’étude des demandes de naturalisation déposées en Côte française des Somalis entre 1911 et 1942, cet article montre que, pour les fonctionnaires coloniaux, les catégories concrètes de la vie quotidienne et de la situation coloniale pouvaient perturber la compréhension des catégories juridiques formelles. Dans un territoire aux frontières floues et habité majoritairement par des migrants, la notion juridiquement peu constituée d’indigène étranger, particulièrement difficile à appliquer aux habitants venus d’Éthiopie, contribuait à cette confusion, ainsi que les souhaits des employeurs, en particulier les compagnies de navigation, de disposer d’une main d’œuvre venue du sud-ouest de l’Arabie. Pour faciliter ces circulations, une législation exceptionnelle et unique crée même des indigènes français sur le seul critère de la naissance sur le territoire. |

| Summary, etc. | Building on the study of naturalisation applications submitted in French Somaliland between 1911 and 1942, this article shows that for colonial officials, the concrete categories of daily life and the colonial situation could disturb the understanding of formal legal categories. In a territory with blurred borders, mainly inhabited by migrants, the legally weak notion of foreign natives, which was particularly difficult to apply to inhabitants from Ethiopia, contributed to this confusion, as did the wishes of employers, particularly shipping companies, to have a workforce from southwestern Arabia. To facilitate these movements, an exceptional legislation even created French natives on the sole criterion of their birth in the territory. |
