| Summary, etc. | Sur la base d’archives françaises, britanniques et américaines, cet article s’interroge sur l’échec du régionalisme mis en œuvre par les quatre puissances impériales de l’espace caribéen entre 1942 et 1964 (Royaume-Uni, France, Pays-Bas et États-Unis). Dans le contexte de la décolonisation et de la Guerre froide, il met en lumière le rôle des rivalités entre les métropoles au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale puis des nationalismes indépendantistes pour expliquer l’échec successif de la Commission et de l’Organisation des Caraïbes. Il montre que cette expérience a influencé les réalisations postérieures en matière d’intégration régionale, à partir de 1965. |

| Summary, etc. | This article, based on American British and French archives, clarifies the reasons why the regional integration process in the Caribbean area, enforced by four imperial states (France, United Kingdom, United States and Netherlands) failed between 1942 and 1964. After World War II, rivalries between these four imperial states were fueled first by Cold war logics, then by local claims for decolonization. Rivalries among nationalist organizations also pressed against the newly created Commission and Organization of the Caribbean area. This article analyses how this failure experience influenced subsequent achievements in regional integration from 1965 onwards. |
