| Summary, etc. | François-Henri Schneider était la figure la plus importante de l’imprimerie et de l’édition au Tonkin (le nord du Vietnam) au début du XXe siècle. Fonctionnaire, il démissionna pour construire « son empire » qui deviendrait incontournable grâce à ses bonnes relations avec les autorités coloniales et son réseau. C’est à lui que devait la création de l’imprimerie, l’édition et la presse en quốc ngữ (écriture romanisée du langage vietnamien) dans la contrée où la culture chinoise restait bien enracinée. Homme d’affaires visionnaire, il sut toujours attacher ses propres intérêts aux projets de propagande des autorités coloniales en mettant à la position de celles-ci de différents moyens : création de journaux d’informations en quốc ngữ, manuels de quốc ngữ, traduction des œuvres littéraires françaises et chinoises en quốc ngữ… Ce travail lui tenait à cœur parce que lui-même était un fervent promoteur de cette écriture romanisée. Toute la première génération de journalistes, éditeurs et traducteurs tonkinois était liée directement ou indirectement aux entreprises de François-Henri Schneider. |

| Summary, etc. | François-Henri Schneider was the most important figure of printing and edition in Tonkin (northern Vietnam) at the beginning of the 20th century. He resigned from his public service to build « his empire » which would become unavoidable due to his good relations with the colonial authorities and his network. It was to him that we owed the creation of printing, publishing and the press in quốc ngữ (romanized writing of the Vietnamese language) in the country where Chinese culture remained well rooted. A visionary businessman, he always knew how to attach his own interests to the propaganda projects of the colonial authorities by putting their position in different ways: creation of quốc ngữ news journals, quốc ngữ manuals, translation of French and Chinese literary works en quốc ngữ… He cared about this work because he himself was a fervent promoter of this romanized writing. The entire first generation of Tonkinese journalists, editors and translators was directly or indirectly linked to the companies of François-Henri Schneider. |
