Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | In Morocco or Mauritania, any history of the ḥarāṭīn involves questions around the etymology of the word, ambiguous, shifting linguistic terms, slippage between notions of « social status » and « economic condition », and debates (among scholars) as to ḥarāṭīn identity at any given moment and in any given place. In both contexts, we find controversies over the role race played in defining ḥarāṭīn in the eyes of society. This chapter looks at two key historical « moments » when ḥarāṭīn became flash-points for the intersection between social change and racial identity : the first being XVIIth-early XVIIIth-century Morocco in the context of Moulay Ismaïl’s construction of his infamous ˤabid al-Bukhārī (« slave army ») ; the second being XXth-century Mauritania, in the context of French colonialism and its inherently contradictory efforts to abolish slavery. In each instance, ḥarāṭīn were catalysts generating political controversy that simultaneously reflected subtle confrontations between religious (islamic) and secular (government) understandings of power. |
