| Summary, etc. | Au fil des siècles, et tout récemment encore, à la faveur de la grande sécheresse des années 1970, les aˁbīd et ḥarāṭīn se sont largement et massivement détachés de l’emprise directe de leurs anciens patrons et maîtres tribaux bīđ̣ân, grâce notamment à un divorce résidentiel qui n’a cessé de s’étendre. Les lieux de cette émancipation sont les villages ḥarāṭīn appelés ādwābä. Les fondements religieux islamiques de la condition servile gardent cependant une indéniable prégnance dans les mentalités mauritaniennes, et cela malgré les multiples dispositions juridiques adoptées au cours des trente dernières années pour tenter d’en venir à bout. |

| Summary, etc. | Although similar movements have occurred gradually over the centuries, aˁbīd and ḥarāṭīn broke away from the hegemony of their former patrons and bīđ̣ân masters on a massively large scale recently in the wake of the great drought of the 1970s. This “break” was emphasized by the physical distance it established between the two groups and which has continued to grow in the villages of emancipation ḥarāṭīn call ādwābä. Nevertheless, islamic religious foundations of the servile condition endure within the Mauritanian mentality in spite of the multiple legal provisions adopted during the last thirty years to overcome these obstacles. |
