| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’accouchement de la République italienne ne s’est pas fait sans douleurs. Le choix de la procédure (référendum) a été controversé. Les conséquences de la Deuxième guerre mondiale, le contexte créé par les destructions, la pauvreté, le chômage et la misère ont été sources de tensions et d’instabilité. Tous les Italiens n’ont pas pu voter : les prisonniers, les habitants de zones frontalières (Trieste, Bolzano), les présumés fascistes sont exclus du vote. Les résultats ont été immédiatement contestés, et la suspicion a perduré. Tout cela s’explique par les conditions dans lesquelles la campagne a été menée, par la régression des monarchistes et la forte opposition entre un Nord et un Centre républicains et un Sud monarchiste. Les Italiens étaient inquiets du futur de l’Italie et de sa place dans l’Europe nouvelle. Voilà pourquoi la monarchie pouvait apparaître comme une protection et un garde-fou. |

| Summary, etc. | The way to the Italian Republic did not go smoothly. The choice of the procedure (referendum) has been discussed. The consequences of the Second World War, the context of destructions, poverty, unemployment and misery has created political tensions and instability. All Italian men and women couldn’t vote : were in fact excluded war prisoners, Italian from border regions (Trieste, Bolzano), suspected fascists. Republic won with an unexpected short advance. The results have been immediately contested and the suspicion continued later on. The reasons of that stand on the way the election campaign was led, the regression of monarchists and the strong opposition between a republican North and Center and a monarchist South. Italian people were afraid of the future of Italy and her place in the new Europe. That’s why they looked the Monarchy as a protection and as a safeguard. |
