Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The death of Charles de Gaulle generated one of the most intense moments of collective emotion in France in the second half of the XXth century. With this popular grief came a reaffirmation of the providentialist image of the General. This article analyses this renaissance of the gaullian myth by drawing upon an original archival source: the public books of condolence opened by municipalities all over France in the wake of de Gaulle’s death. Three features of this providentialism are underscored. Firstly, its dynamic character, and its capacity for ideological renewal; next, its affective and grieving dimensions; and finally its multi-dimensionality: de Gaulle symbolized the realization of the providentialist teleology both in its ideal-typical forms (the sage, the saviour, the political educator, the founder of new political order) and historically (in the favourable comparisons drawn between the General and other iconic figures in the French national tradition). |
