| Summary, etc. | RésuméLe 13 février 1871 se réunit à Bordeaux l’Assemblée nouvellement élue pour négocier les conditions de la paix. Parmi les représentants élus se trouvait Garibaldi, qui avait été envoyé par le suffrage de plusieurs départements. Sa présence provoqua un tumulte. Il n’obtint pas l’autorisation de prendre la parole. Il se retira et quitta bientôt Bordeaux pour retourner sur son îlot de Caprera, au nord de la Sardaigne. Quelques jours plus tard, en signe de protestation, Victor Hugo donna sa démission. Le déchaînement de passions qui s’est manifesté en cette occasion mérite explication. Après avoir rappelé les causes de l’élection de Garibaldi et des préventions manifestées à son égard, nous restituerons les conditions de l’incident et examinerons les interprétations qui en furent données. L’analyse de l’événement apporte un élément de compréhension de l’état d’esprit politique dans la République française qui inaugure ainsi un nouveau rituel parlementaire. |

| Summary, etc. | On the 13th of February 1871 the National Assembly recently elected meets in Bordeaux in order to negotiate the conditions of the peace. Among the elected representatives was Garibaldi, who had been sent by the vote of several departments. His presence provoked an uproar. He was not allowed to express himself. He retired and soon left Bordeaux to return on his Island of Caprera, in the North of Sardinia. A few days later, in sign of protest, Victor Hugo resigned. How such passions did arise? After recalling back the causes of the election of Garibaldi and the preventions shown towards him, we will restore the conditions of the incident and see which interpretations were made. The analysis of the event gives an element of understanding the political spirit in the Third French Republic which so inaugurates a new parliamentary ritual of the political confrontation. |
