| Summary, etc. | Grâce aux travaux de différents chercheurs, l’origine et l’évolution du sens du mot « banlieues » sont connues, tout comme les réalités qu’il recouvre pour les institutions qui en font une catégorie d’intervention publique ou les médias qui l’érigent en problème. Cet article propose de changer de point de vue en s’interrogeant sur la définition de ce mot et sur les réalités qu’il recouvre aux yeux d’une mouvance associative qui en est issue et qui a successivement pris la forme et le nom de Résistance des Banlieues, du Mouvement de l’Immigration et des Banlieues, puis du Forum social des Quartiers populaires entre 1988 et 2012. Pour celle-ci, le vocable « banlieue » représentait un enjeu stratégique concernant sa façon de se positionner dans le champ social et politique. |

| Summary, etc. | The origin and evolution of the meaning of the name banlieues (suburbs) in France are known, as much as the realities that this term conveys to the institutions that make it a category of public intervention or in the opinion of the media that identifies it as a problem (in France, suburbs basically means popular neighborhoods). This article will attempt to change this viewpoint by questioning the definition of this word and the realities that it covers according to an associative movement that comes from these neighborhoods. This movement successively took the shape and the name of Ré sistance des Banlieues, Mouvement de l’Immigration et des Banlieues, and Forum Social des Quartiers populaires, between 1988 and 2012. And the word banlieues represented a strategic stake in the way it positioned itself in the social and political fields. |
