520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | On September 9, 1561, the remarks made by Theodore de Bèze at the opening of the Colloquy of Poissy provokes violent reactions among the Catholic assistance, and the dismay of Admiral Gaspard de Coligny. In order to understand this attitude, it is necessary to go back to the sources of his commitment to the Protestant Reformation in 1560. Since the death of François II in early December 1560, Coligny seems to have been mistaken. Coligny interprets the fact that Catherine de Médicis supports him at the court and at the Royal Council, as a sign of sympathy for the Reformation and sincerely believes that the King and his mother can quickly become Calvinists. However, if the Regent protects the Admiral, it is mainly because she needs him to counterbalance in the Council the political weight of the Triumvirs, uncompromising Catholics. |
