Utilisé pour désarmer les thèses nobiliaires de la supériorité franque, pour affirmer la prise de souveraineté du peuple, mais aussi pour revendiquer l’appropriation de droits antiques qui auraient été usurpés lors des époques ultérieures, ce récit est pourtant lourd d’ambiguïtés : il renforce autant la défense transnationale d’un droit des gens qu’il alimente les premiers nationalismes européens. |
