| Summary, etc. | Le Matin, l’un des « quatre grands » de la presse française, exerce un pouvoir considérable au début du XXe siècle. Son propriétaire, Maurice Bunau-Varilla, est un maître chanteur sans scrupule qui fait trembler députés, ministres et chefs d’État. En 1907 et 1908, deux sénateurs, Joseph Chaumié et Charles Humbert, osent lui résister en poursuivant Le Matin en justice. Leurs victoires, presque simultanées, mettent fin à une période d’arrogance extrême au cours de laquelle Bunau-Varilla se sentait intouchable et tout-puissant. |

| Summary, etc. | Political power against media power: the trials of Chaumié and Humbert vs. Le Matin (1907-1908) Le Matin, one of the « Big Four » of the French press, was a very powerful newspaper at the beginning of the twentieth century. His owner, Maurice Bunau-Varilla, was an unscrupulous blackmailer who overwaved deputies, ministers and chiefs of state. In 1907 and 1908, two senators, Joseph Chaumié and Charles Humbert, dared to resist him by suing Le Matin. Their victories, almost simultaneous, put a stop to a period of extreme arrogance during which Bunau-Varilla felt untouchable and omnipotent. |
