| Summary, etc. | En 1839, Alexis de Tocqueville se lance en politique. Et il le fait avec le projet d’installer dans la France de la monarchie de Juillet ce qu’il appelle une « démocratie modérée ». S’il reste un député isolé, ce qu’il est au début des années 1840, il ne peut atteindre cet objectif. Il lui faut donc prendre les commandes d’un parti. Et c’est ce qu’il tente de faire une première fois, en 1842, en intégrant l’équipe dirigeante de la Gauche dynastique puis, une seconde fois, cinq ans plus tard, en créant sa propre organisation, la Jeune Gauche. Bilan : deux stratégies et deux échecs. Tocqueville rêvait d’un parti aux idées libérales et aux mœurs honnêtes, malheureusement pour lui, rares étaient les électeurs et les élus qui, sous le règne de Louis-Philippe, partageaient son rêve. |

| Summary, etc. | In 1839, Alexis de Tocqueville entered politics. He did so with the aim of establishing what he called a “moderate democracy” in the France of the July monarchy. If he remained an isolated deputy, which he was in the early 1840s, he could not achieve this objective. He therefore had to take control of a party. And that's what he tried to do for the first time, in 1842, by joining the Gauche dynastique leadership team, and then a second time, five years later, by creating his own organization, the Jeune Gauche. The result: two strategies and two failures. Tocqueville dreamed of a party with liberal ideas and honest morals, but unfortunately for him, few voters or elected representatives under the reign of Louis-Philippe shared his dream. |
