520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The Introduction into Europe of Aristotle’s books on Friendship, starting at the end of the 12th century, challenged Cicero’s overwhelming influence on theories of Friendship. As Friendship was grounded on virtue according to Aristotle, it seemed ill-suited to politics. The good ruler had as well reason to be wary of Friendship, for it could be deceitful and dangerous. In politics too, a real friend was and should stay a rare blessing. But facts don’t really match the theory: at the end of the Middle Ages many kinds of alliances were devised, and all of them drew heavily on Friendship and on its vocabulary. |
