| Summary, etc. | Les controverses sur l’autisme sont le reflet des représentations multiples qui se sont développées au cours du temps. Sous l’impact des changements des classifications des maladies et de l’action des associations de parents, la maladie rare et sévère a été redéfinie comme un handicap aux origines génétiques impliquant un développement atypique du cerveau. Les associations de parents ont contribué à modifier la définition de l’autisme, les pratiques diagnostiques, les méthodes d’intervention et à orienter les recherches vers la génétique et les neurosciences. Les approches éducatives et comportementales ont été favorisées donnant aux psychologues comportementalistes l’opportunité de développer un marché lucratif qui déclenche un nouveau sentiment de culpabilité chez les parents, celui de ne pas avoir les moyens de mettre en œuvre tout ce qu’il faut pour aider leur enfant. Pourtant, seuls certains enfants répondent positivement à ces méthodes et les effets à long terme sont peu connus. Par ailleurs, la mise à l’écart des enfants considérés comme trop déficients devrait inciter à relativiser l’espoir en une méthode miracle. |

| Summary, etc. | The autism controversies reflect the diverse representations that have changed over time. The changes in the classifications of mental diseases and the parents’ associations favoured the widening of the diagnostic criteria for autism. The rare and severe disease became a common disability with a genetic aetiology involving an atypical development of the brain. The parents’ associations play a crucial role in the changes in the diagnostic practices and the care services for autism, as well as the focus on genetic and neuroscience research. The promotion of the educative and behavioural methods gave the opportunity to behavioural psychologists to develop a lucrative market at the origin of a new feeling of guilt for parents who cannot pay for these services. However, only some of the children respond positively to these methods and long term effects are unknown. Moreover, children who are considered too “deficiency” are pushed aside by the behavioural psychologists. This selection has to be taken into account regarding the hope in magic formula. |
