| Summary, etc. | L’intérêt pour le tirage au sort dans la sphère académique s’est développé parallèlement dans la science politique et dans les sciences historiques. L’introduction de ce numéro hors-série de Participations en retrace la généalogie et tire les leçons d’une rencontre entre ces deux champs. Se concentrant sur le tirage au sort en politique, elle analyse la constitution progressive d’un ensemble de pratiques spécifiques, relevant du « sort distributif » (Thomas d’Aquin) et distincts du sort divinatoire. Trois résultats sont soulignés : le fait que le tirage au sort ait été utilisé de façon intensive dans l’histoire politique, y compris au-delà des républiques et démocraties occidentales ; l’importance des instruments utilisés pour la sélection aléatoire ; et le fait que la procédure puisse, en fonction des contextes, servir à des logiques sociopolitiques très contrastées. L’actualité proprement politique du tirage au sort est enfin interrogée. |

| Summary, etc. | Interest in sortition in the academic sphere has developed separately in political science and in the historical sciences. The introduction of the special issue of Participations analyzes its genealogy and draws the lessons of an encounter between these two fields. Focusing on political sortition, it explains the constitution of a specific set of practices, which are part of the distributive sortition and are distinct from divinatory sortition. It stresses three results: the intensive use of random selection in political history, including outside Western democracies and republics; the importance of the tools necessary for sortition practices; and the fact that the same procedure, according to the contexts, can serve quite contrasted sociopolitical dynamics. Finally, it reflects upon the present growing popularity of random selection in the political sphere. |
