À la fin des années 1960, la croissance ralentit à la suite d’une baisse de la fécondité qui touche simultanément les pays développés et certaines régions du Tiers-Monde. Aujourd’hui, cette baisse s’est généralisée, au point que de nombreux pays ont une fécondité inférieure au seuil de reproduction. Cette tendance lourde va conduire, en un peu plus d’une génération, à un vieillissement sans précédent de la population mondiale. |

The reversal of this trend was very fast, occurring as early as the 1950s, mainly in Third World countries. This may be the sign of a possible “second demographic transition.” The decline of fecundity is general and the inversion of the population pyramid foretells a universal aging, probably implying major economic, social, and political problems. |
