Summary, etc. | The inhibitory effect of cranberry type-A proanthocyanidins (PACs) on the adhesion of Escherichia coli to uroepithelial cells is well known. As this adhesion is one of the early stages of urinary tract infections, cranberry is used for the prevention of these infections. Cinnamon, another food source of type-A PACs, was tested for its non-adhesion potential in an in vitro model of human bladder epithelial cells (T24 cell line). In this model, a Ceylon cinnamon extract standardized to contain more than 8% A2-type proanthocyanidins (PACs) inhibited the adhesion of Escherichia coli. The effect observed was dependent on the dose of PACs. Tests carried out in combination with a cranberry extract have shown a synergistic effect between the two extracts combined in certain proportions. These results suggest that cinnamon may be useful in the management of urinary tract infections. |

Summary, etc. |
