| Summary, etc. | Depuis que le Tea Party s’est approprié le nom du groupe de « Patriotes » ayant jeté des cargaisons de thé britannique dans le port de Boston en 1773 – se posant ainsi en défenseur de l’héritage révolutionnaire des États-Unis –, le débat autour du sens et de la portée de la révolution occupe une place centrale dans les « guerres historiographiques » aux États-Unis. En analysant les travaux de recherche et les interventions publiques de Gordon S. Wood – représentant traditionaliste dans l’actuelle « politisation de l’histoire » –, cet article a non seulement pour but d’identifier les points controversés de ce débat mais également d’exposer les problèmes auxquels se heurte l’historiographie conservatrice aux États-Unis. Dans un premier temps, nous exposerons les grandes lignes du récit historique de la révolution américaine que propose Wood. Puis, nous démontrerons que ses travaux de recherche, et plus particulièrement son apologie de la démocratie américaine, témoignent d’un élan nationaliste. Dans un troisième temps, nous contextualiserons sa trajectoire historique au sein des conflits historiographiques contemporains. Enfin, cet article expliquera pourquoi l’on ne peut pas qualifier la recherche de Wood de « conservatrice » en mettant en lumière les défis a priori insurmontables que pose une écriture conservatrice de l’histoire des États-Unis. |

| Summary, etc. | Ever since the Tea Party Movement – claiming to defend America’s revolutionary heritage – appropriated the name of the group of “Patriots” who dumped British tea into Boston harbor in 1773, the debate over the meaning and significance of the American Revolution has moved to the center stage of the “history wars” in the U.S. By analyzing the scholarship and public interventions of Gordon S. Wood – a protagonist from the more traditionalist side in today’s “politics of history” – this article will not only identify the contentious issues among the participants of the debate but also expose the problems and obstacles a conservative historiography faces in the U.S. First, the general contours of Wood’s historical narrative of the American Revolution will be sketched. Second, the nationalist impetus of his scholarship, particularly his uncritical celebration of American democracy, will be demonstrated. Third, his historical trajectory will be contextualized within America’s current “history wars.” Finally, this article will explain why it is wrong to call Wood’s scholarship “conservative,” exposing the seemingly insurmountable challenges of conservative history writing in the U.S. |
