| Summary, etc. | RésuméÀ partir de l’étude de la chute politique de Denis Obua, président de longue date de la Fédération ougandaise de football association (Fufa), et à travers un examen du microcosme footballistique, cet article s’intéresse à la relation complexe entre l’État, des organisations apparemment non politiques comme la Fufa, et des institutions internationales. Il défend l’idée selon laquelle la Fufa appartient à un type d’organisation qui ne s’intègre dans aucune des deux catégories générales de l’analyse politique contemporaine – l’État et la société civile. Faisant appel à une terminologie plus ancienne, il soutient que la Fufa est une polity. N’appartenant entièrement ni à l’État ni à la société civile, elle (tout comme d’autres polities telles les chefferies, les royaumes, les sociétés religieuses) s’inscrit dans une position qui brouille les frontières analytiques usuelles. De telles polities sont susceptibles de contribuer à une forme spécifique de pluralisme dans la production politique de la vie quotidienne. |

| Summary, etc. | The complexitites of democracy : the Ugandan Football Association as polityCentered on a case study of the political fall of Denis Obua, a long-serving president of the Ugandan Football Association, Fufa, this article explores the complicated and murky relationship between the state, ostensibly non-political societal organizations such as Fufa, and international institutions through an examination of the microcosm of football. It argues that Fufa belongs to a larger class of liminal organizations that fit comfortably under neither of the two of the broad rubrics of contemporary political analysis — state and civil society. Employing an older term, I argue that Fufa is a polity. Neither fully of the state nor of civil society, Fufa (and other polities such as chieftaincies, kingdoms, corporations, or religious organizations) exists in a liminal position that further blurs the analytical frontier between state and civil society. Such polities may be contributing to a different sort of political pluralism in the politics of daily life. |
